Chambord
Campsite near the Château de Chambord
Perhaps the most famous but above all the most grandiose of the Châteaux de la Loire, Château de Chambord was dreamed up by François I, a king who loved pomp and art, and it was designed by Leonardo da Vinci.
Take advantage of your holiday in the Loire Valley to discover this timeless work of art that will span the centuries. Enjoy a great day out at Chambord!
Leonardo da Vinci was not the architect, however, as he died when the work began in 1519. Although feudal in inspiration with its central keep surrounded by four towers, Chambord no longer evokes the military architecture of the Middle Ages but rather the refinement of the Italian Renaissance with sculpted facades and large openings. Inside the castle, the double helix staircase is most probably the work of Leonardo da Vinci. The Château de Chambord stands in the middle of a wooded estate once renowned for its hunting. Today it is a superb place for walkers who can follow 3 marked footpaths or the GR3 which crosses the park. Lovers of atmospheric views will undoubtedly get up early to discover the castle in the morning mist and the beautiful dawn lighting.
